Notice to Supplier Partners: New Canadian Importing Requirements for Steel and Aluminum

September 5, 2024

Dear Valued Supplier Partners,

As part of Valiant TMS’s commitment to maintaining a transparent and compliant supply chain, we wish to inform you of important regulatory updates from the Government of Canada regarding steel and aluminum imports. These changes will impact the requirements for importing steel and aluminum products into Canada, effective November 05, 2024.

New “Melt and Pour” Requirements for Steel

In accordance with the Government of Canada’s recent mandate to enhance the transparency of the steel supply chain, all imports of steel must meet the following requirements:

  • Mandatory “Melt and Pour” Information: Importers must provide documentation showing the country where the steel was melted and poured. This step ensures that the entire supply chain is traceable, from raw material processing to final product manufacturing.

This new measure applies to all steel products imported into Canada and is designed to strengthen oversight, promote fair trade, and support Canadian industries.

For further details on the “Melt and Pour” requirements, please refer to the official government notice here.

General Import Permits for Steel and Aluminum (GIP80, GIP81, and GIP83)

Additionally, there are specific updates related to the General Import Permits (GIP) for steel and aluminum products:

  • GIP80 – Carbon Steel: Importers are required to obtain a permit under GIP80 for the importation of carbon steel.
  • GIP81 – Stainless Steel: All stainless steel imports must be authorized under GIP81.
  • GIP83 – Aluminum: Aluminum imports, including semi-finished products, fall under GIP83 and require appropriate documentation.

To ensure compliance, we request all suppliers to review and adhere to the import regulations outlined by the Government of Canada.

Further information on the general import permits can be found on the following links:
